6. Searles Wood was born in Melton in 1764, son of Richard Wood & Jane Bartes (Barth). He entered the service of the Honourable East India Company (HEIC) and became the Commander of the company ship the Worcester. This was the 4th and last ship of that name belonging to the East India Company . The first was launched in 1685, a ship of only 220 tons which made only one voyage. The next two ships, 499 tons then 723 tons made 4 voyages each. The ship which Searles commanded was 798 tons and made 8 voyages, probably from the Port of London to Calcutta and back as Searles is referred to in 1799 as 'Mr Searles Wood of Calcutta'. His home address appears at the time he made his will in 1809 as 'Searles Wood of St Mary Lambeth'. .The East India Company was taken over by the British government. Presumably the Worcester was scrapped and replaced by even larger and faster vessels. Captains of these ships were said to be able to become very rich and there is certainly evidence of this where Searles is concerned.
The IGI records the marriage of Searles Wood and Mary Catherine Rosina Fagalde on 27 May 1806 at Old Church St Pancras. This is a real mystery since it appears that Searles and Mary were already married! The evidence for this is from a court case at the Old Bailey concerning the prosecution by Mrs Wood, 24, wife of Mr Searles Wood of Calcutta, of a personal maid, Esther Mason, aged 21 for pawning and stealing various items including clothing. The total amounted to less than 39s worth so Esther Mason was sentenced to be transported for seven years (the penalty for stealing more than 39s being hanging!), at that time probably to Australia. Several details about Mary Catherine Rosina are revealed by this case. She was born in Stockholm about 1775, being therefore eleven years younger than Searles and had lived in England for nine years. Her lawyer tried to explain some legal term to her in French (her origins could be from a French family of that name noted for their chocolate-making) and probably still had a strong accent. At the time of this court case she was living in lodgings and had access to as much money as she needed. All she had to do was to apply to the agent her husband had appointed for as much as she required. There did not appear to be a limit.
The court case itself is fascinating. It reads like a short story and can be found in full on the Old Bailey website. There is slight confusion at the beginning as Esther Mason had apparently accused Mrs Wood of not paying her wages and of locking the door of her room so that she could not collect her clothes when dismissed from Mrs Wood's service. Mrs Wood had been arrested the day before, but only briefly. She was soon released and then accused the maid of the thefts. The case was quite quickly concluded after Miss Aurelia O'Hara, friend of Mrs Wood and daughter of the Governor of Gibraltar vouched for her in court, though Miss O'Hara was very reluctant to appear at all until summoned by a sub-poena.
Over the question of the Wood-Fagalde marriage there are several possibilities and yet more questions raised. Since all marriages, except between Jews and Quakers, had to take place in the parish church, the only place licensed, one elsewhere would be invalid, being ignored as merely a 'blessing'. Or they may have had only one witness when two were required. Mary Catherine could have been Catholic by origin, the marriage being at an embassy though a search of several has revealed no such marriage. It could have been abroad. They might not have realised that their 'first' marriage was invalid. Serving soldiers needed the permission of their commanding officers to be married and perhaps there was a similar requiement for the East India Company, especially if their first marriage was before Searles became a Captain himself. These are only suggestions, it remains a puzzle.
A couple of nieces from the next generation (one seen on the tree above) were given the name Rosina as a middle name! The name 'Searles' is also perpetuated, but probably more as an older family first name. It doesn't look as though Searles and Mary had any children themselves. Searles made his will on 13 Feb 1809 and may have died soon after, at the age of 45.

Aucune opposition au dit mariage ne nous ayant été … faisant droit à la réquisition qui nous est faite après avoir donné lecture de toutes les pièce ci-dessus mentionnées, et du chapitre VI du titre du code civil intitulé du mariage, avons demandé au futur époux et à la future s'ils veulent se prendre pour mari et pour femme, chacun d'eux ayant répondu séparément et affirmativement, déclarons au nom de la loi que Fagalde Jean et Soubelet Jeanne sont unis par le mariage.
